Tsuge Kiku Bori (chrysanthemum carving in boxwood) refers to the technique and products in which intricate chrysanthemum floral motifs are finely carved into boxwood. It is mainly used for Buddhist implements such as rosaries, shogi pieces, seals and printing blocks. In rosaries in particular, the rich, deep hue of the boxwood, combined with the intricate chrysanthemum carvings, creates a sense of luxury, making them popular in various Buddhist sects. 

The deep brown of the boxwood, finely carved with chrysanthemum motifs, is accentuated by the red of agate, one of the seven treasures of Buddhism, enhancing its luxurious appearance.
The tassels are made from high-quality pure silk cord.

Material characteristics
Boxwood
This wood is yellow-brown in colour with a fine grain and high strength, allowing for complex carving. It is used to carve seals, printing blocks, chess and shogi pieces, combs and rosaries. Furthermore, with use it acquires lustre and character, becoming richer and more dignified over time. Both its feel and comfort improve with age.

Agate
Agate has been highly prized since ancient times and is considered one of the seven treasures of Buddhism. It comes in a rich variety of colours and lends itself well to craftsmanship, being used worldwide for works of art and sculpture. It is said to strengthen bonds between people and restore balance between mind and body. It is also used as a talisman for fertility, safe childbirth, health and longevity.
