Wajima-nuri (輪島塗) is a traditional style of Japanese lacquerware originating from the city of Wajima, located in Ishikawa Prefecture. It is considered one of the most prized types of urushi (Japanese lacquer) and is distinguished by its durability, beauty and meticulous craftsmanship.Wajima is considered the lacquer capital of Japan, with craftsmen passing down this technique for centuries.

Chinkin (沈金) - Engravings in lacquer filled with gold powder.
This chinkin technique is considered a good match for Wajima-nuri.
Wajima-nuri is completed through 124 processes. The lacquer layers are constructed like a millefeuille, with a ‘base layer, middle layer and top layer’ in the lacquering process alone,
Chinkin is only possible when the lacquer has sufficient thickness.
