Wajima-nuri (輪島塗) is a traditional style of Japanese lacquerware originating from the city of Wajima, located in Ishikawa Prefecture. It is considered one of the finest types of urushi (Japanese lacquer) and is distinguished by its durability, beauty and meticulous craftsmanship
Wajima is considered the lacquer capital of Japan, with craftsmen passing on this technique for centuries. However, the industry faces challenges such as a dwindling number of craftsmen and high production costs. After the Noto earthquake in 2024, many workshops were destroyed, further endangering this tradition.

Despite this, interest in Wajima-nuri continues, with efforts to preserve this art form through modern collaborations and government support.

This vermilion-coloured container has a roiro sheen, characteristic of lacquer.
