His story is linked to the epic of the Genpei Wars (1180-1185), narrated in the epic ‘Heike Monogatari’. Kagekiyo (Taira no Kagekiyo) was a samurai of the Taira clan, known for his courage and tragic fate.
The Character of Kagekiyo in the Noh
Kagekiyo appears in several Noh dramas, including the famous **"Kagekiyo ’**, in which he is portrayed as a defeated samurai reduced to poverty. After the defeat of the Taira clan, he takes refuge in a remote location and lives as a blind beggar, consumed by shame. In a key scene, he is visited by his daughter, who wishes to see him again and bring him home. However, Kagekiyo, now destroyed in body and spirit, refuses to return, preferring to face his fate alone.
