Kyogen is a spoken theatre based on dialogue. It does not use large-scale sets and expresses everything through words and gestures. The main characteristic of kyogen is laughter. Using the everyday life of ordinary people in the Middle Ages and stories as its subject matter, kyogen takes a deft look at human behaviour and essence and transforms it into broad ‘laughter’ or ‘humour’.
